Welcome to the Bountiful community Yuhua Jin, a post-doc at MIT and now an adjunct research scientist within the Human-Centered Computing & Intelligent Sensing Lab at UCLA.

Yuhua is looking for collaborators for his invention from his time at MIT. It's a physical color-changing technology he named "Photo-Chromeleon". This technology enables users to change the physical color of objects at will, even after fabrication!

Now is a good time to remind you that Bountiful is on Twitter! Check us out and follow our list of "Scientists to Watch".

One of these cool new models is worth calling out. The Footprint Coalition, funded in part by actor Robert Downey Jr., is a new hub where leading scientists can share their research and engage directly with our audience to support it. They're working with a cool platform called experiment.com, where individual researchers working on technologies combating our climate and biodiversity crises can receive fast grants and funding from engaged coalition members. There are open calls in cellulary agriculture, indigenous futures, community science & environmental justice, conservation biotech, and "augmented discovery". Applications are open now so check it out if this applies to you!

Takeaways from Building in Hard Tech

This was a really awesome and detailed article by Alishba Imran and Shagun Maheshwari, two of the founders of VoltX, a deeptech startup in the battery space. She offers lessons learned from her experience as a young founder navigating co-found relationships, fundraising, customer validation and more. Lots of practical advice for those of you looking to spin out your research and build a startup.

Ayse Asatekin is an associate professor and the Steve and Kristen Remondi Faculty Fellow in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Tufts University. She is an entrepreneurial academic that keeps her home base in academia, but has been a founding scientist and inventor on two university spinouts in the water sector, the most recent of which, ZwitterCo, just raised $6M to continue commercializing their technology to use zwitterions to coat membranes that are resistant to fouling and can treat waste streams with fats, oils, grease and more.

Ayse provided a ton of insight into conducting research with an eye towards scale and commercialization, including the importance of de-risking inventions at an early stage in anticipation of what investors and industry might ask. She spoke very candidly about her past experiences in spinning out technologies, what she has learned, what she would advise young inventors considering doing the same, the importance of the team, and much more. It's an encouraging episode for any listeners that want to invent for commercialization but still remain in academia, dedicated to research. Enjoy!
